Last week I took Isabella back to her dorm at the University of Alberta, and I thought on sharing some of my “Going Back to College”experience on the way.

Not that I’m an expert now, at all! Only lil things that worked for us.

Avocado Socks? Yes please!

This is Isabella’s second year at the University of Alberta. It seems to me like it was yesterday when I took her to her first-year dorm. (There are visible changes, aem, long hair/short hair).

But what I noticed the most, it was the incredible confidence that my young woman has now, compared to the hidden fear she had last year.

It wasn’t easy though. Last year she didn’t have any friends at the beginning, then she met her roommate, the sweetest girl in the world, and everything started to work out.

From there, meeting some other fantastic kids was a little bit easier. Now she has a wonderful group of friends, and all of them support each other on the journey.

Farewells are never easy (Was I too crazy for capturing that moment instead of joining them? I guess I was)

I desperately miss my little girl already, but that is life. I can only trust on her, and on the values she got her whole life. I don’t expect her to be perfect, I expect her to be smart, to be happy, to be grateful, and to be kind.

Now, in case you have a child soon to go to college, and are wondering what to get them for their room, here is my list from last year:

  • Bed Pillow
  • Sheet Sets (I bought 2)
  • Blanket
  • Comforter Set
  • Mattress Protector
  • Mattress Pad
  • Mattress Topper
  • Space Saving Hangers
  • Storage Bin
  • Towel Set and Robe
  • Shower Caddy
  • Flip Flops
  • Desk Lamp
  • Dry Erase Board
  • Planner
  • Sewing Kit

Of course I’m not including the basic stuff such toothbrush or shampoo.

I must say that last year when the four of us (Carmelo, Isabella, DS and I) went to the stores to buy those things, it seemed I was the one who was moving. I went crazy to get everything I wanted for my girl.

We shopped at Bed Bath and Beyond, Walmart, and Ikea. There we found everything we were looking for. Ah, and we found some useful stuff at Dollarama (hello soap dish cover)

There is no ending here. I’ll keep posting about it soon!

I'm Ilse Barrios.

I started this blog as a journal to document my life in Canada. My family and I came to Calgary in 2016, and I’m still figuring out life around here.In case you haven’t noticed yet, (ha!) English is my second language, so I apologize in advance if misspellings or lousy grammar get in the middle of the stories but writing in English is an everyday challenge, and I love it!
